New Writing Opportunities 1st Quarter 2013
Here are some new opportunities for writers. I know that many of my readers are home-based freelancers or run a home-based business. I also know that many of you are writers.

The Poised Pencil
If you are into writing young adult mystery stories, submit your work. Requirements include:- has to 45,000 to 80,000 words
- submit with a cover letter indicating the synopsis, blurb about the author including works published in the past
- must be based in US or Canada

They are alooking for new novels (less than 80,000 words). They are looking for:- literary fiction

The Buenos Aires Review
They are looking for prose. It has to be under 5,000 words. It could be fiction or non fiction and please submit at least 5 pieces at a time.The BlueCat Screenplay Competition
This is for 2014. Prize includes:- Best Feature Screenplay = US $15,000

The Warner Bros Writers’ Workshop
They are accepting applications until June 1. You need to provide:- a script sample based on the current shows of WB that's on their second season or older

- letter stating what's unique about you that would add value to WB

The Ernest Hemingway Foundation Of Oak Park’s Writer In Residence Program
They will give you a place where you can work for a year in exchange of giving lectures, workships and other engagement to other aspiring writers. Application is up to June 1.The Fairhaven Literary Review

This is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) that is spearheaded by Brown University. You will read about 10 novels in 12 weeks. Classes start June 3.Penguin Australia’s Monthly Catch
Every month from the first day to the 7th day, Penguin is open to fiction and non-fiction submission. You need to send via their website. Submit the manuscript with a synopsis and a biography.The Newcastle Poetry Prize

MA in Television Fiction Writing Scholarships
Take this at the Glasgow Caledonian University. It includes one-year representation by a London Agent. You have until June 28.The Ghana Poetry Prize
is being offered for the first time in 2013. The prize is Gh ₵ 2,000 (equivalent to $ 1000). The aim of this prize is to support younger emerging poets and entry is open to poets based anywhere in the world. The deadline is 30 June.The Cowley Literary Award

The McLellan Poetry Prize

NASA is seeking haiku poems
They want a haiku which will sent to Mars with the MAVEN orbiter. Everyone is invited but you have to be 18. The submission must be in english, though.You have until July 1.

You have to be based in Melbourne. Theme for 2013 is "Evolve". Submissions must be no more than 2,500 words. You have until July 7.The Carmel Bird Short Fiction Award
This is for Australians only. Submissions must be no more than 4,000 words. Winning pieces will be published.You have until July 31.
Seán Ó Faoláin International Short Story Competition
Prize money is €2,000. You will also be published in Southword and will also get a residence to the Anam Cara Writer’s and Artist’s Retreat for a week.You have until July 31.
The California Book Awards
Open to residents of California. There will be a winner for Fiction, Nonfiction, First Work of Fiction, Poetry, Californiana, Notable Contribution to Publishing, Juvenile Literature and Young Adult Literature. You have the whole month of July.The Costa Short Story Award
You need to have had your short story previously published.Should be no more than 4,000 words.
